Why should you homeschool your kids? Think about it, we’re only 200 years removed from the beginning of the public school system. In comparison to the length of time learning has been a thing, that isn’t very long. Now is a good time to ask yourself; when did it become normal to send your child off to be taught by someone you don’t know.

This is not an easy decision to make. There are so many variables but I’m going to cover the main reasons you should homeschool your kids according to biblical principle.

Nevertheless, at least take the time to serious contemplate it and make an educated decision. I don’t advocate blind support of anything. There’s no reason to go from blindly embracing public school to blindly embracing homeschool. The idea here is, know what you are dealing with.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments section. I’d love to hear how you came to your own decisions in schooling your children.

First off, I totally get it, everybody’s doing it. Public school is “just what we do”. Pop culture has a way of creeping it’s way in, completely sweeping logic to the wind. Truth is, God didn’t mean for strangers to be teaching our children the ways of the world.

Like what to wear, how to react or respond to relationships or belief systems. This world is spiraling down the pit of despair at the speed of a Indy race car headed down the straightaway. I wouldn’t waste time wondering if you should homeschool your kids or not.

At this point, it’s not even an “I’ll pray about it topic”.

There are major things you should be sheltering your children from. You can read more about that here!

Let’s jump to the main course with three things God has to say about why you should homeschool your kids. Real quick, regarding the prayer statement above…

It is written, pray that God’s will be done here on earth as it is in heaven. So, after reading what God has to say it’ll be easy to see what His will is. I love how simple he makes life. Don’t you!

It’s cut and dry. You are solely responsible for training your child. Unfortunately, children don’t come out knowing exactly what to do.   Don’t we all wish!

Homeschooling our kids gives us the opportunity to do all the training. In my breakdown of a child’s life during school years I showed they would be in the public school system for 19,000 hours over the course of 13 years. That’s a lot of lost training time to strangers.

PROVERBS 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Of course, you maybe saying to yourself, I have no clue what to teach my kids. God wouldn’t tell you to teach them without giving you an outline. Thankfully, He shows you not only the what, but the how.

Aside from reading, writing, and arithmetic the most important things a child can learn are the ways of the Lord.   Don’t think you aren’t smart enough to teach your child. What you know is enough. You’ve made it just fine. The more you teach, the more you learn, meaning, the more you have to pass on.

And don’t forget we are living in an age of knowledge. You can find anything on the internet. God doesn’t judge character and worth by educational levels. He judges by the condition of the heart.

If we leave are children to be taught by a system that doesn’t value God they are spending 19,000 hours in a God hating system.

Not. Good.

It is important to understand the major things you should absolutely be sheltering your children from. Read it here!

DUETERONOMY 6:5-9 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

We only have direct influence on our children for a short period of time. 1 to 6 years of age are basic training.  7-13 years are bulk. 14-18 years are practice. We have to take advantage of the few years available to teach them and set them up to succeed at life.

We want to see them rise above in a career, relationships, trials, obstacles, challenges, grief, and real wins. 19,000 missing hours of time is a lot of time gone, add that to the 23,000 hours they will be sleeping and we are looking at 5 years wiped clean off the map like a dry erase maker.

Realistically you have 8 years of time to instill what they need.

8 measly years is nothing in comparison to the 60, 70, 80 years they will live apart from us.  The question I pose is this, “Is 8 years enough preparation time for 70 years worth of living? And if so, Do you really know what they learned, were you there?

These are vulnerable years.

Take advantage.  You can nurture and admonition your children in the Lord by choosing to homeschool your kids. Not for a few minutes during family bible study but during those astonishing amount of hours they would be with strangers.

EPHESIANS 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

To the destruction of society, it’s become hate speech to expect people to take responsibility for their own actions. There’s a radio commercial that plays often. Never fails to grind my nerves every time I listen to it.

It’s an ad for a law firm that specializes in representing folks who have received a DUI, which is serious. Driving Under the Influence of alcohol!

They advertise, you can just call them and they’ll help you take care of it. Get rid of it.

Shouldn’t those people driving drunk serve a consequence for their bad choices. Drunk drivers kill people when they get behind the wheel of a thousand pound weapon of mass destruction! How many people have to die due to reckless behavior before things change?

Homeschooling your kids gives you the immediate ability to rightly and effectively discipline and require responsibility for their actions.

When you send your child off to a public school system you will miss an untold amount of bad behavior choices that go unnoticed or undisciplined.

Did they hit, talk back, misuse their emotions, lie, not follow through on their word. Maybe they reacted instead of responding to a challenging situation. Did they gossip all day with the rest of the group. Did they join in with a bullying session. Or even worse, did they lead the troops in something like that.

When, or if you are notified about any of this the discipline will come far later than it should. Discipline is meant to bring correction not punishment.

There’s a right design for discipline that can only be carried out when you are actively present in the lives of your children.

Don’t let this time pass. Once they reach teen years, they should have the ability to make positive and structured decisions with less guidance. Those decisions should make them productive contributors to society.

PROVERBS 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

I know it’s scary to think of changing everything to stay home and homeschool your kids. How will you pay the bills, what will you teach them, will you mess them up? Questions will flood your mind. I am here to tell you I left my job with 7 children 5 of whom I school at home and we lived on one income.

You can read more about some of the ways I made extra money to cover the cost here.

There are so many resources available to help you navigate your way around homeschooling your kids.

Have courage.

I know you have fears but courage doesn’t mean you’ll never be scared. It means you will decide to take action despite the fear that screams NO, which will lead you to overcome that fear! Take that leap of faith. You see here God is on your side.

It is written, “Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven” Matthew 6. It’s God will that you train up your child in the way they should go.
