DO NOT CONFORM A SERIES: FEAR
From the time of birth until death at any point in life, it’s like a carnival. We’re either on a ride zooming around or standing in line waiting. Along the way, any number of things could happen to cause trauma whether it be a tragic car accident that leaves you paralyzed and unable to drive a car. Doing a period of time in a war where you see death without the freedom to grieve can result in Post Traumatic Stress Syndrom (PSTD). Or maybe you fell into some water and nearly drown. In any case these things will have an effect on your life.
Nevertheless, holding onto the experience in fear can hinder growth and your ability to live life in abundance. The Lord never meant for you to live in fear. Freedom comes when we can take courage in pushing through the fear. Let’s take a deeper look.
History of Phobias
The term phobia has a Greek root although it basically means fear. Phobia was coined by a Roman doctor called Celsus. He used it to describe the horror one of his patients had regarding water due to rabies.
Apparently, people with rabies had a dire thirst but were unable to drink. The term was taken from a Greek god known as the god of war. The warriors would paint the god on their armor which created a fear in the enemy.
Later, in 1786 the Oxford English Dictionary entered a definition.
“A fear of an imaginary evil, or an undue fear of a real one.”
It became more commonly used in the 1800s. So this term is relatively new in comparison.
Take a moment and think about that story there. The fear the patient originally had was due to an illness and a ramification of that illness on his abilities. The name was taken from a Greek god and the strategy they used against enemies. None of that is of the Lord to begin with.
This is what happens when biblical principle gets pushed to the side one compromise at a time.
The term fear and all of its variations is used over 500 times in the bible. Out of all 500+ times, there is only one theme that is repeated over and over.
It is noted for every situation and for every occasion. FEAR THE LORD GOD. That is it!
Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. Revelation 14
And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10
Ponder this above scripture deeply. Is there anything on earth including, animals, insects, elements, food or substance of any kind that can kill more than just your body?
In fact, there are times that God is the one who brings the fear.
It is always because they have come against Him in some way. Is this a generation so prideful to believe that we are better than the ones in scripture?
Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations. I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not. Isaiah 66
Anytime God brings fear about it’s in an effort to turn you back to HIM. You must understand with a depth that God has a desire that none should perish but have everlasting life. So, in His effort to lead you to choose life He may bring about a fear to turn you.
It’s like a street sign telling you which way to go. To the destruction of individuals these days, instead of people turning to Him they are turning to medications and medical diagnosis.
It is a choice.
Fear is always a choice. Are you going to heed His sign to turn away from the phobias and let God be the solution? Or, join in with the world by embracing an imaginary evil or undue fear of anything that can only kill the body and not the soul?
Don’t be fooled, the world makes a mighty profit on phobias each year. Sadly, more people are falling slave to them. Fear of water is one of the most popular.
In fact, remember from the beginning, it was the fear of water that Celsus coined the term, hydrophobia. Read how turning away from that fear, and into the arms of GOD, SAVED MY SON from hydrophobia.
I get it, there are scary things in life.
Essentially, you could live in a bubble and never come out because everything can hurt you in some way or another.
One day kale is the secret to long life, the next day it’s contaminated and can kill you.
You must stay focused on the main attraction which is JESUS. He came so that you may have freedom and live life abundantly.
Jesus is the truth. Embrace that truth. Who the Son sets free is free indeed.
‘And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. If the Son, therefore, shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. ‘ John 8
The best part is even when you do come in contact with the lord, the first thing he says again is, do not fear. His reasoning is because he gave us the liberty and privilege to come to him on the throne.
He is so knowable it is wild to even fathom.
The fear of the Lord is the only fear worth having. Any other fear is a destructive frame of mind that needs to be renewed.
Anytime fear challenges you, keep your focus on the Lord asking Him to be your strength. The more you do that each time you face the fear, the less power it will have.
Essentially, nothing is more powerful than God, but everything is more powerful than you. When you stand up to the fear with your eyes focused on the Lord it is like when Peter walked on water with Jesus.
Most people always talk about the fact that he sank when his faith wavered.
Instead, let’s remember that HE DID WALK ON WATER when his faith was solid!!
BE THE ONE WHO STANDS OUT BECAUSE OF VICTORY WHILE THE WORLD LIVES IN FEAR!
